Avoid storing avocados next to bananas or kiwis
If you want to eat a healthy diet, you should primarily rely on plant-based foods. Experts recommend eating five to ten servings of fruit and vegetables a day. To keep fruits fresh, it is important to store them properly. For example, apples and avocados should not be kept with bananas and kiwis.
Allow avocados to ripen faster
A few years ago, many people only knew avocados from their vacation in distant countries. In the meantime, the fruits can be found in almost every German supermarket. However, the popular super fruit is often far too hard to buy. Experts therefore point out how to get the avocado ripe faster: by wrapping it in paper with an apple and then storing the packet at room temperature. Avocados and apples should not be kept with other fruits.
Prevent premature spoilage
According to the initiative “Too good for the bin!” By the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL), every citizen throws away an average of 82 kilograms of food a year - 44 percent of which are fruit and vegetables.
"The sensitive fruit needs to be stored carefully to prevent it from spoiling too quickly," the initiative wrote in a message.
Some varieties in the fruit bowl ensure that the neighboring person rots faster. This has to do with the ripening gas ethylene.
Store fruits and vegetables correctly
Certain types of fruit such as avocados, apples, pears and apricots release ethylene gas as they ripen. This "ensures that fruits in the area ripen prematurely and decompose faster," says the message.
Such fruits should therefore not be stored in the fruit bowl next to the usually fully ripe bananas, kiwis and mangoes.
For this reason, tomatoes should also not be kept too close to other fruits and vegetables.
The vegetable compartment of the refrigerator is a good place to keep for many types of fruit. In addition to apples, you can also keep berries, apricots, grapes and cherries fresh for longer. (ad)
