Blueberry juice improves cognitive functions in old age
Regular consumption of blueberry juice concentrate obviously improves cognitive functions and blood flow in the brain. British researchers found this in a small study. Due to their high content of flavonoids, blueberries have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects.
In the study, 12 healthy seniors between the ages of 65 and 77 received 30 ml of concentrated blueberry juice daily for a total of 12 weeks. That corresponded to about 230 grams of fresh blueberries containing 387 mg of anthocyanins. The control group with 14 subjects received isocaloric placebo juice.
The participants in the blueberry group showed a significant improvement in brain activity and blood flow in various brain areas after 12 weeks. They also did better in the cognitive tests. You can find the study here.
